Sean Paul, new to the dancehall Scene since 1997 has made quite a name
for himself in such a short period of time. Original from the start, he
is no doubt one of the wickedest dancehall artists today. His name is
his own, unlike others who opt to take on the frequented names of Ranks,
Deemus, Banton or Benz. Sean Paul chose the simplest of names, his first
and middle to represent him as an artist.
At the young
age of 24, he is not completely new to the dancehall scene as we may think.
Since the early 1990's Sean Paul has been writing lyrics for tunes, some
of which we now hear today. Though his career right now is music, Sean
Paul is an educated man. Graduated from what is now known as The University
of Technology in Kingston Jamaica, he completed a degree in Hotel management.
Upon completion
of his degree, Sean decided he wasnt ready to persue that career. Instead
he put forth all his effort into his music, which over time he nurtured,
refined and developed into the artist we see today. Most people know Sean
Paul for his infections song "Infiltrate" featured on the Reggae Gold
98 compilation. But it was actually the song "Babygirl" released previous
when he blazed onto the scene.
His different
yet familiar voice has had him confused and compared with those other
artists, such as Spragga Benz or even Supercat. His musical inspirations
include classic dancehall artists like Supercat, Tiger, Lt. Stichie and
Shabba. Others like Spragga Benz, Mad Cobra, Bounty Killer and Beenie
Man also have an influence on his music.
Fans may
have noticed Sean Pauls constant reference to the Dutty Cup Crew. This
crew is made up of 6 artists, Kid Kurrupt, Dodigan, Mossy Kid, Luggerman,
Chicken and of course Sean Paul.Disappointing to many a fan, is that this
promising and truly talented Sean Paul has yet to release a solo album,
despite his frequent releases on 45s. He records under Jeremy Hardings
"2Hard" label for the most part, but can also be seen on compilations
from Jamdown Records, Penthouse, VP records, Greensleeves and under the
ShockingVibes label.Sean Paul is a trully compelling force in the dancehall
industry. Fans, myself included, cant wait for a probable release of his
own solo album, or an eventual Dutty Cup Crew album in the near future.
